You just got paid – but now let’s make sure you understand your paycheck!

What is on My Paycheck?

Most paychecks include:

  • Federal tax
  • State tax
  • Social Security + Medicare taxes

Sometimes also:

  • Health insurance
  • Retirement contributions
  • Other benefits

Gross vs. Net Pay

  • Gross pay = what you earned
  • Net pay = what hits your bank account

Net pay = Gross pay – taxes – deductions

What to Look for on Your Pay Stub

Your pay stub will show you:

  • How many hours you worked
  • Your pay rate (ex. Hourly pay rate!)
  • Gross pay
  • Deductions
  • Net pay

Tip: It’s helpful to review each paystub to ensure it’s accuracy!

Getting Paid at JHU

  • Student employees are typically paid biweekly
  • Pay is based on hours submitted and approved
  • There’s usually a 1–2 week lag between working hours and getting paid
  • You can view pay stubs and payment details in your JHU payroll system
