Private Scholarships

How Private Scholarships Impact Your Financial Aid Offer

You can use outside, private scholarships to reduce your summer savings expectation (Freshmen – $1,800; Returning students – $2,600) and work-study expectations ($2,700). If private scholarships exceed your total summer savings and work-study expectations, your Hopkins Grant will be reduced dollar for dollar.

For freshmen, you can receive up to $4,500 in private scholarships before any reductions to your Hopkins grant funding. For returning undergraduate students, you can receive up to $5,300 in private scholarships before any reductions to your Hopkins Grant funding.

Veterans Programs

Hopkins participates in all veterans’ programs, including Yellow Ribbon and the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Veterans’ educational benefits are treated as private scholarships, first replacing the summer savings expectation, and work-study portions of your financial aid offer dollar for dollar.

NOTE: All students who receive government and entitlement scholarships—i.e., a Federal Pell Grant, ROTC, state scholarships, and employer tuition benefits—and whose need was fully met in the original financial aid offer will have the amount of their Johns Hopkins University-funded scholarships reduced by the full amount of the private scholarship. For example, a student who receives a state scholarship of $500 will have their Johns Hopkins University-funded scholarships reduced by $500. The total amount of financial aid will remain the same.

Examples of How Private Scholarships Are Built into Your Award

Example 1:

John is a freshman and has a summer savings expectation of $1,800 and a parent contribution of $20,000, for a total family contribution of $21,800. He also has a work-study award of $2,700. He has received $2,000 in outside scholarships that need to be built in.

  1. Cancel out summer savings expectation of $1,800.
  2. Reduce work-study award by $200, leaving a work-study award of $2,500.

Example 2:

Jane is a sophomore and has a summer savings expectation of $2,600 and a parent contribution of $50,000, for a total family contribution of $52,600. She also has a work-study award of $2,700. She has received $1,000 in outside scholarships that need to be built in.

  1. Reduce summer savings expectation by $1,000, leaving a summer savings expectation of $1,600.

Example 3:

Stacy is a junior and has a summer savings expectation of $0 and a parent contribution of $1,000, for a total family contribution of $1,000. She also has a work-study award of $2,700. She has received $5,000 in outside scholarships that need to be built in.

  1. There is no summer savings expectation to reduce.
  2. Cancel out work-study award of $2,700.
  3. Reduce Hopkins Grant by $2,300.

OEDb Scholarships & Grants for Single Moms

Description:
While paying for school in this day and age can be challenging for any demographic group, single mothers are in a class of their own when it comes to grant support for higher education. Single mothers are among the groups most affected by the downturn of the economy in the last decade, with unemployment rates at 7.6%, which is higher than the national average.

If you are single mother, you may qualify for a number of different grant types, depending on your circumstances. The amount of funding you can receive from need-based grants or scholarships for single moms can vary considerably, ranging from as little as $100 to full tuition coverage. Depending on the sources of the free grants for single moms, award amounts may also change from year to year. Additionally, some colleges and universities offer separate tuition discounts for single mothers.

Eligibility:
To qualify for school grants for single moms, you will need to verify that you are a single parent by demonstrating head-of-household status with at least one dependent under the age of 18 on your most recent federal tax return. You will likely also need to document your income and financial need by filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), particularly if you are applying for a government-funded scholarship or grant.

Though specific requirements vary according to program, your federal tax-filing status can be used as a general guide for this process: if you are divorced, or not married but living in a state that recognizes common-law partnerships, a good rule of thumb is to submit the same filing status and income information on both your tax return and grant application.

OEDb Scholarships for Women

Description:
Scholarships for women can be controversial. There are laws against gender discrimination, and many women’s scholarship funds get bogged down in red tape. But these college scholarships for women are just one among many helpful resources available to females who are hoping to minimize the gender gap and pursue equality amidst their male counterparts.

This is where our list of dedicated college scholarships for women comes in. Some of the scholarships below are available only to single parents, returning students, or those pursuing specific subjects. We also included a special category for women’s scholarships designed to increase educational opportunities for women and increase their presence in STEM industries.

See each scholarship for more specific details.

Eligibility:
Eligibility requirements for women’s scholarships and how to get a scholarship typically vary from one funding organization to the next. Scholarships awarded by professional organizations often require the applicant to study a specific subject, such as business or technology. Other scholarships target non-traditional female students with financial need in a particular location, requiring applicants to meet specific residency and/or age thresholds. Other eligibility requirements may include:

  • Identify as female
  • Have legal U.S. resident status
  • Meet specific GPA, SAT, GRE, or other merit requirements
  • Enrolled in an accredited program
  • Plan to study a specific subject or field
  • Over a certain age
  • Pursuing a first degree
  • Meet specific financial need requirements

Requirements for women’s scholarships can vary greatly; while the above list contains many possibilities, it is not all inclusive. With a growing number of organizations establishing unique college scholarships for women, there are numerous diverse awards available for female students of all types and across many disciplines. The list below represents a small selection of scholarships created exclusively for women.
