Funding scholarships is a direct way to open doors of opportunity for talented students – and prepare them to be the leaders we will need in the decades to come.

Background

The Sellinger Program was established in 1973 by the State of Maryland to preserve and strengthen a dual system of higher education, which includes public and private, nonprofit colleges and universities working collaboratively to meet the State’s higher education needs. Through the Sellinger Program, the State provides grants to eligible independent colleges and universities. These grants are used to support Maryland’s goals for higher education.

Johns Hopkins University aims to return the State’s financial investment through teaching, conducting research, providing services to local communities, creating jobs and generating income for the State’s economy, and bringing national and international recognition to Maryland. This is aligned with Johns Hopkins’ mission to educate its students and cultivate their capacity for lifelong learning, to foster independent and original research, and to bring the benefits of discovery to the world.

Impact

In FY2025, Johns Hopkins will spend over $19 million in Sellinger funds to provide need-based grants and scholarships to Maryland residents, with the goal of ensuring equitable access to affordable and high-quality postsecondary education. As a result, Marylanders have greater choice and opportunities to enroll in college and pursue their dreams.

How It Works

All permanent residents of Maryland who are undergraduate students in the Krieger School, Whiting School, or Peabody Conservatory and are receiving need-based institutional scholarship will be considered for the Sellinger Grant.  No separate application is required.  Students will be notified in November.

The Sellinger Grant helps fund the institutional scholarship assistance students receive.  Therefore, receipt of the scholarship does not increase scholarship assistance students are already receiving.

It is important to note that while this scholarship does not provide additional financial aid funding, it is an honor to be selected and students are encouraged to include the scholarship on their CV, resume, and LinkedIn Profile. Students will also have access to networking events and mentorship as recipients of the Sellinger Grant.
