Student Financial Support (SFS) believes that perspectives from students should provide significant input into our office’s decisions. To ensure the student perspective is considered, the SFS Student Advisory Board was created.

What is the Student Advisory Board?

The Student Advisory Board (SAB) is a group of undergraduate students who partner with SFS and provide feedback that will shape communication initiatives and programming of SFS. They also assist SFS in promoting awareness of financial aid practices and procedures within the Homewood Campus community. The board serves as a platform for students to share feedback, raise concerns, and collaborate on financial aid related topics.

We will meet up to twice per semester and fellowship over food while discussing various financial aid related topics. The meetings are likely to be in-person; however, we may host them virtually if needed.

Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Students selected to serve agree to a one-year commitment, including a minimum of two virtual and/or in-person meetings per semester and occasional one-on-one meetings with SFS staff.
  • Members are expected to actively participate in meetings and complete any pre-meeting tasks requested by SFS.
  • All members must maintain the same standards and qualifications established by the university’s Code of Conduct, and students participating in extracurricular activities.

What We Do

  • Advocate for improvements to processes and policies
  • Provide student feedback to the Student Financial Support office
  • Identify issues students face when navigating through financial aid processes
  • Assist with evaluating financial aid resources for students, including emails, website content, flyers, platforms, etc., before they are shared with the full student population.

How to Join

Complete the Interest Form. A member of Student Financial Services will follow up and let you know if you have been selected.

Selection Process

To have an equal representation of the student population at Johns Hopkins University, SFS seeks Homewood undergraduate student members of diverse backgrounds, regardless of financial aid eligibility.

The leadership team of SFS will select the Student Advisory Board cohort from interested students who complete the Student Financial Services Advisory Board Interest Form. Those selected will be contacted by the end of September and asked to sign a privacy agreement.

Our Accomplishments

24/25 Academic Year

The SAB was asked to review three (3) informational videos that were created by the Student Financial Support team. The videos were intended to provide clarification for financial aid students on topics that many students have sought additional information about.  The video topics covered were Private Scholarships, Additional Semester aid, and Off-Campus Housing. The SAB reviewed the videos and provided great feedback, including the need for visuals to go along with the topics being discussed and answers to questions that were not covered in the video.  As a result of the SAB feedback, the videos received a complete overhaul with great visuals.

Check out our new and improved informational videos.

Any undergraduate student who is currently enrolled at Johns Hopkins University with an interest in financial aid and/or student leadership is welcome to apply.

How often does the SAB meet?

The board will meet a maximum of twice per semester.

Is this a paid or volunteer position?

The SAB is a volunteer opportunity. However, joining our board offers experience in leadership and advocacy by directly impacting the office of Student Financial Support.

Do I need to have financial aid experience to join?

Absolutely not! We welcome all students who are interested in making their voice heard to help themselves or other students.

Can I get involved even if I do not join the SAB?

Of course! We occasionally host tabling events, surveys, and other financial aid related events. We always look forward to hearing feedback from students. You can check our events page for the upcoming academic school year for more information.
